YEARS OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY, Showtime Series by James Cameron starring Hollywood stars explores what is being called “the biggest story of our time.”
ABOUT THE SERIES This groundbreaking documentary event series explores the human impact of climate change. From the damage wrought by Hurricane Sandy to the upheaval caused by drought in the Middle East, YEARS OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY combines the blockbuster storytelling styles of top Hollywood movie makers with the reporting expertise of Hollywood’s brightest stars and today’s most respected journalists.
We will be watching the premiere episode with Harrison Ford. This episode of Years of Living Dangerously examines the devastating effects of climate change and global warming on the environment, wildlife and humans in three diverse regions of the world: Texas, Syria and Indonesia.
The drought in Western Texas and subsequent shutdown of a meat packing plant and the effects this has on the families in this small town are explored alongside the role that the drought in Syria played in increasing political instability in that country resulting in the uprising and subsequent civil war that currently rages there.
Finally, the role of deforestation and air pollution in climate change are examined via the lens of the palm oil industry’s expansion in Indonesia, the country which has seen the largest increase in greenhouse gas emissions over the last decade. Harrison Ford travels to Indonesia to better understand the roles that government corruption and increased global consumption of palm oil have played in the deforestation of pristine rain forests and habitats for some of the world’s most endangered animals.”
Discussion to follow with members from the University of Arizona’s Palm Oil Awareness Initiative.
